Hill, who is scheduled to instruct the Research Council Course in the fundamentals of sound recording, has not entirely recovered from his illness, which necessitates further postponement of the start of the course. First meetings of the classes are now scheduled for Jan. 13 and 14, at the Hollywood High School. T T T Frankie Darro, co-star with Roy Mason in the series of features being made by Conn Pictures, has been entertaining Frankie Smith of San Diego, winner of the nation-wide Bost Toothpaste slogan contest. The Bost Company sponsors the Frankie Darro Stamp club. In the first 31 days of growing a beard for his part in "The Prisoner of Jh3rk Island," Warner Baxter attained a growth of 1,003 inches— 20th CENTURY-FOX. Sterling Holloway has been signed to appear in Walter Wanger's "Palm Springs," which Aubrey Scotto is directing. T T r Roy Chanslor, who wrote the screenplay for "Man Hunt" and who collaborated on the scenario for "Front Page Woman," is now writing the screenplay for "The Gentleman from Big Bend," based on George M. Cohan's play, "The Hometowners." T T T Ginger Rogers, John Boles and Johnny Arledge were among the former Texans who were kept busy playing host to the Lone Star residents who flocked to the Coast for the Stanford-S.M.U. game. Ginger was made an admiral in the Texas Navy by Governor Allred at a Texas society banquet here. Robert Warwick has been signed to replace H. B. Warner in the cast of "The Return of Jimmy Valentine," Republic production featuring Roger Pryor and Charlotte Henry. Warner could not complete his present role in "The Garden Murder Case" at M-G-M in time to start the Republic production. With the addition of Edgar Kennedy, Hooper Atchley, Lane Chandler and Franklin Parker, the cast of "Jimmy Valentine" is now complete. Detroit Doings Detroit — J. I. M. Schwartz has been made manager of the Regent by United Detroit Theaters, succeeding Claude Deerdorf. Vincent Sullivan will be his assistant. Both were formerly at the Fisher. Vernelle V. Ward has been made manager of the Rosedale, succeeding B. A. Morthorst. The Regent and Rosedale, taken over by United from Mrs. Ida Klatt, will be completely modernized. Sam Rubin, former publicity man for United Detroit Theaters, has joined the Mills Artists publicity department. Europa Theater has shifted to a revival policy instead of foreigns only. Butterfield's Colonial, Holland, was damaged to the extent of $25,000 by a recent fire. Bay City-Rialto Theater Co. has been incorporated as operating company for the Temple, Bay City, being renamed the Rialto upon acquisition by Associated Theaters. Colleen Moore is exhibiting her $400,000 doll house at the J. L. Hudson department store. William G. Bishop, M-G-M division publicity director, arrived in town last week and left Monday for Cincinnati to promote "Riff-Raff". Felix F. Feist, Al Lichtman and W. F. Rodgers, after a two-day confab here with J. A. Flynn, also head for Cincy. James Minter, Flint circuit operator, was a visitor here last week. St. Louis Squibs St. Louis — Fanchon & Marco's Fox Theater, largest of local firstruns, has adopted Bank Night, which is now being used in most of the subsequent run houses. Vic Klarsfeld, new office manager for the local B. N. Judell branch, has been enjoying some nice business since taking over his new duties from Eddie Rosecan, who moved across the Mississippi River to become manager of the Rialto, Granite City, 111., in which he bought an interest. Les Levy is the new feature booker for RKO in St. Louis. Indianapolis Items Indianapolis — E. C. Grainger, division manager, and George Roberts, district manager of 20th Century-Fox, spent several days in the city on business. F. E. Wagoner, manager of G.B. exchange, was in Cincinnati several days last week in conference with Arthur Lee, president, and George Weeks, sales manager of the company. Mrs. Helen Keeler, manager of the Associated Theater Owners of Indiana, returned to the office after a trip to Florida. Billy Esch of Paramount's sales force surprised his physicians by his rapid recovery from a triple operation and will leave for Florida in a few days to recuperate. Charles Olson and wife left for New York last week on business and pleasure combined. Employes of the Columbia exchange organized a social club to be known as the Columbian's. Abe Baker is chairman. Marley Hunt has been appointed manager of the State Theater. Describing "Bank Night" as a lottery, the Marion county grand jury in its final report Friday recommends new legislation to prohibit them. Cleveland Clips Cleveland — Dick Deutsch of the Dick Deutsch Printing Co., has left for a three-week vacation in Miami. Myer Fine of Associated Theaters is laid up with a bad cold that keeps him confined to his home. Louis Gross of Johnson, Gross & Solomon, and who is also mayor of North Olmsted, is back from Florida, where he took his family early in December. Floyd E. Hiegel, who runs the Mystic at Leipsic, has opened the Ottawa Theater, Ottawa. Russ Wilson of Best Devices has put on the market a new 1,000-watt lantern slide projector for use in larger auditoriums and theaters. Howard Roth, Paramount booker, is back from a trip to Milwaukee. Maurice Kaplan, local theater circuit owner, leaves Jan. 14 with his wife and baby to spend two months in Florida. Claude King, Christian Rub and Schuyler Shaw have been added to the cast of "The Leathernecks Have Landed," Republic production starring Lew Ayres. Howard Bretherton is directing. ▼ ▼ T Charles Bickford, following completion of his role in "U. S. Smith" for Columbia, is set for a featured part in a Paramount picture not yet titled. ▼ T T Edward H. Griffith's prophetic remarks concerning the heretofore unknown James Stewart's selection several weeks ago for the male lead opposite Margaret Sullavan in "Next Time We Love" have been borne out. A New York stage actor, Stewart was brought to Hollywood by MG-M several months ago and placed under contract. Confronted with serious difficulties in obtaining the services of a prominent leading man to share honors with the prominent Miss Sullavan in the Universal picture which he was preparing to direct, Griffith was shown tests of several "unknowns," from which he selected Stewart. Last week, after seeing a preview showting of "Next Time We Love," M-G-M executives assigned Stewart to play the featured male role opposite Janet Gaynor in "Small Town Girl." T T T Republic's first 15-episode serial for 1936 has been completed and is now in the cutting room. Clyde Beatty stars in this jungle vehicle, entitled "In Darkest Africa." Man I uel King, eleven-year-old wild anJ imal trainer, makes his initial appearance in this production. ▼ ▼ ▼ Oliver H. P. Garrett has been signed by David O. Selznick to do a, script for either Merle Oberon or Tilly Losch, both of whom have been awarded one-picture contracts by Selznick International Pictures, producing for United Artists. T T T Countess Liv de Maigret, noted beauty, has been given a role in "One Rainy Afternoon," first Pickford-Lasky picture for U. A.
