Toronto — As a means of encouraging interest in motion pictures and in discovering possible motion picture talent the Daily News has inaugurated a unique contest, in which the winners will receive free trips to California and an opportunity to work in the Famous Players— Lasky studios for one month. Each winner will be paid $25 a week during the try-outs and in case they make good will receive six-month contracts at that salary, plus an unusual opportunity for steady advancement. << Flu" Notes Los Angeles — The "flu" continues to appear and re-appear at a number of points. Where I come from supportin' means payin' some one's bills — but it's all different in the movies. lack Pickford's mother cured him of bein' tempermental when he was five years old. It was while he was travelin' in a road show in which Mrs. Pickford, Lottie and Mary were featured. Jack was taken along 'cause it was easier than leavin' him home. The part he played was small — in fact it wasn't any part at all. He just had to lay on a couch and cough. But even at that age Jack was a business man ( and demanded to know what salary he j was gettin'. His mother told him he wasn't gettin' any salary at all. and | lack refused to go mi unless he was given twenty-five cents a week His ! mother said she guessed they could I find another boy for the part, so they got a newsboy who w as glad oi the chance. Jack watched the show from the wings that night and when he saw the newsboy coughed better^ than he did, he decided he wou'd take the part back again. Jack says he has never been tempermental since.
