New and used motion picture films are classified under No. 1992 of the Guatemala Import Tariff of July 1, 1919, and are assessed $1.50 a kilogram duty including the weight of the inner package, payable entirely in American currency, making about $0,682 a pound. In addition, there is a consular fee of 2% ad valorem collected by the Guatemalan consuls at ports of shipment on all shipments to Guatemala. Reimports free. In 1927 the taxation on theaters was 10% of the gross receipts from all theaters. At the end of 1927 it was increased to 15% for all theaters. Theaters all over the republic were closed for twenty days in January, 1928, as a protest against the increase in taxation. This closing however had no effect.
