on theater screens increased the demand for larger arc lamps with water-cooled carbons and for projectors with water-cooled apertures. Westrex developed and made available to the export field in 19 50 its L8 loudspeaker system. This backstage equipment was tailored by Westrex to meet the demands of small theaters and features the same Western Electric speakers, high frequency horn and network used in the largest and finest systems. It achieves economy without sacrificing the high quality standards set for Western Electric speaker systems by employing a more compact low-frequency horn and baffle combination. Westrex noted during the year an increased interest in drive-in theater equipment in all parts of the world. Interest in magnetic recording crystalized into action in many studios last year following the introduction of the Westrex Series 1000 Master magnetic film recording system. Westrex magnetic systems are designed for fixed studio or portable local application and they use, with slight adaptation, 35mm, \7y2mm or 16mm magnetic film. Each complete system includes two dynamic microphones, a microphone floor stand, a two-input position mixer and transmission unit, a magnetic recorder, a power control unit, .1 complete set of spare glassware and fuses, and all inter-connecting cables for operation from a single phase, 50 or 60 cycle, 115-volt power source. Altec Expands Production Facilities on West Coast ^LTEC LANSING CORP. opened a new plant in Beverly Hills, Calif., to supplement the production facilities in Los Angeles and New York. Over 30,000 square feet are devoted to the assembly and testing of loudspeakers and amplifiers and to the complete fabrication of microphones. New testing facilities include several floating "dead' rooms, a plane-wave tube and many racks of testing apparatus. The plant in Los Angeles was given over to the manufacture of Peerless division transformers and to the machine and metals departments for the fabrication of chassis and other components. Engineering facilities in the new plant and offices were greatly improved, providing what is said to be one of the most up-to-date research and testing labs in the United States for the development of audio and electronic devices for use by civilians ind the armed forces. Interchangeable Speaker Case Created by Autocrat y^UTOCRAT SPEAKERS in 1950 were sold again by Century dealers throughout the United States. The entire Autocrat output has gone solely to Century Projector Corp. Production and sales were well ahead of 1949. Autocrat the past year developed a newly-designed speaker case and hook (die cast) to fit and interchange with other leading makes of speakers so that the replacement field could be handled by Century dealers. The firm has several thousand speakers on hand, but says that new Government limitations and freezes "almost eliminate any possibility for even half-way production." Its plant is in the process of conversion to full war work. Autocrat plans to continue its service at least to Century and its dealers, even after its production supplies have been exhausted, so that its dealer set-up "will be there waiting and ready once the duration, whatever that is, is over." More in Foreign Field Acquire Reeves Equipment "CEATURE FILM PRODUCTIONS in Teheran, Lisbon and Havana acquired complete picture and recording facilities from the Reevesound Co. and Reeves Equipment Corp. during 1950. Portugal's Cesar de Sa and Cuba's Productors Filmica Cubana have added their names to the long list of studios giving screen credit to Reevesound around the world. The Iranian government is currently engaged in a large defense and educational film program, entirely Reeves equipped. Additional equipment was shipped to Estudio Bolivar in Caracas, Venezuela, to accelerate its feature and newsreel program. New Reeves Magicorder owners in America during 19 50 include Soundmasters, Inc., Eastman Kodak Co., Pathescope, Inc., Affiliated Films, ConIon Productions and the Sound Film Studios, Inc., Detroit. Latest 1951 Magicorder producers are Audio Productions, Lillis and Murphy and Pepsicola. Manufacturing facilities have been enlarged for 1951. AIR CONDITIONING U. S. Air Bolsters Line Of Package Cooling Units 'j^'O MEET the growing need of the modern theater for greater flexibility in cooling load? for prompt change-over to winter heating and fo. essential savings of water in condensing refrigerants. United States Air Conditioning Corp. of Minneapolis has refined and strengthened its line of package refrigeration units. The firm's refrigerated Kooler-aire is a completely integrated unit that combines cooling sec tion, compressor and evaporative condenser in a pre-engineered package, ready for simple, accurate installation. The evaporative condenser section effects water savings up to 9 5 per cent of the amount employed in the condensing operation. As the ordinances against water consumption multiply, the evaporative condenser not only savei exhibitors money in water and sewage costs, but in many instances makes it possible to comply with local ordinances and provide needed cooling. Kooleraire can be equipped with heating coils to make this single unit do double duty as a cooling and 633
