The control can be set to operate automatically through the entire color range or to produce predetermined colors. The Rollocolor control unit in size and appearance is similar to a small portable radio. The controls are said to be as simple to operate. Rollocolor is suggested as novel, effective and dramatic means of lighting marquees, lobbies, walls and other parts of theaters as well as the stage. DRIVE-IN CONSTRUCTION Prefabricated Drive-in Package from Ballantyne 'pHE LATEST MOVE by the Ballantyne Co. to make available low-cost outdoor theaters in complete packaged units was the announcement of a new prefabricated drive-in package. Cited in favor of this new prefab theater were low initial cost, low maintenance cost, exceptionally fine construction, and rustic beauty. All units, the screen tower, marquee, box office, concession stand, fencing, and even the ramp markers, speaker posts, and moonlight tower, were constructed of Northern Michigan white cedar logs and saplings. This type of timber was used because of its unusual weather-resistant qualities and because it requires little maintenance. The drive-in was so designed that practically all units were constructed with large prefabricated sections of logs. Erection of the prefab drive-in was quick and easy with resultant saving in construction costs. Complete detailed blueprints and erection instructions were furnished with each job. These 15 units comprised the drive-in; screen tower, single or double face screen tower wings, marquee with tower, ticket office, concession stand, six different type fences, moonlight tower, ramp markers, speaker posts, and entranceexit signs. The screen tower is 5 5 feet high and 50 wide, made up in large, easily-applied sections. LAMPS Motiograoh Devises Lamp Giving Greater Illumination jyjOTIOGRAPH, INC. made available in 19 50 the first high-intensity reflector-type arc lamp with a rotating positive carbon mechanism to burn the new 10mm positive carbons. Tests showed that these lamps, operating at 100 amperes, gave greater screen illumination than condenser rvoe arc lamps operating at 180 amperes. HydroArc Lamp Placed On Market bg Ashcraft S. ASHCRAFT Manufacturing Co. placed in production a new high powered, non-rotating carbon projection lamp called the Ashcraft HydroArc. Among some of the highlights of the new lamp are a larger lamp house and reflector. The Hydro-Arc is designed for the rapid dissipation of heat from the four kilowatt arc whereas the older types of lamp were equipped to handle onlv rhe heat from a 2.3 kilowatt arc. The new reflector is 15 inches against the older one of l-* inches diameter which no longer is considered practical. GE Invents Bulb That Makes Theater Smell Nicer ^ENERAL ELECTRIC created a small lamp bulb capable of making a theater a more inviting place. The device is credited with the ability of reproducing indoors on a small scale the fresh, clean smell that prevails outdoor during an electrical storm. The four-watt lamp, less than an inch and a half in diameter, produces ozone which has a deodorizing effect. The ozone generated by a single bulb is said to suffice to mask odors in an area of up to 1,000 cubic feet. Assertedly the lamp also has a mild germicidal effect. General Electric also came up with an experimental sun-heat coin machine that could b; used in theater lounges. The machine has a timer and a tape for measuring the proper exposure distance from the lamps. CARBONS National Out With Carbon Productive of More Light JvjATIONAL CARBON in 19 50 marketed a new 10mm x 20" high-intensity projector carbon for use in the new angular trim rotating type high-intensity reflecting arc lamps. This carbon has been designed for operation up to 100 amperes. Laboratory tests show that at this current the 10mm carbon will give about five to seven percent more light and a definitely better side to center distribution than the 9mm x 20" carbon at 8 5 amperes. Because of the larger size of light source, the coverage on the aperture plate will be better and the latitude of operation will be improved. This carbon is operated with the standard 11/32" X 9" "Orotip" negative carbon. National also announced the re-int*-oduction of the "Victory" carbons, on which the thickness of the copper coating is reduced on two of the most popular projector carbon trims — the 8mm "Suprex" positive with 7mm "Orotip "C" negative and the 7mm "Suprex" positive with 6mm "Orotip" "C" negative. This action is similar to the measure taken during World War II and was initiated to assure an adequate supply of carbons concurrent with a reduction in the usage of copper as directed by the government's copper conservation order.
