Censorship — A new Censorship Act covering the whole of the Union of South Africa was brought into force in July. This reoealed all previous acts in force in the secarate Provinces, each of which had power to censor films prior to passing of the new act. Competition — The import of films from America remains fairly constant at about 85 per cent of the total, the balance 15 per cent being English productions. The importation from Germany and France is practically nil owing to the language question. Production — African Films Productions, Ltd., have produced a number of short talking films which have been very successful. Taxes — A new Entertainment Tax has also been passed in the Province of the Transvaal, which has hitherto been exempt from such taxation. Theaters — The year has been a very bad one for theaters generally, the outside districts suffering very severely owing to the fall in commodity prices, and quite a number of small silent houses in the outlying districts have closed down for good. The number of theaters oren is approximately 450 and of these African Theaters, Limited, own or operate 85 and Kinemas Limited about 25. Sound — The number of theaters in the territory wired for sound now totals 156. Imports from U. S.
