May 1938 FILMINDI A them which demands full co-operation from the press. These remarks are necessary, because the other day I was invited to a press show by a local otfice of foreign films. Half-a-dozen leading papers were represented, but there was no one to receive the pressmen on behalf of the people who issued the invitations. The press people were left to the tender mercies of a couple of door-keepers and of the operator. The show was due to start at 12 noon. It actually began at 12-40 p.m. The fans in the auditorium were switched off and there was no one to whom an appeal could be made to switch them on. Even the theatre was not represented by anyone intelligent. To add injury to insult, the wrong picture — and not the one for which invitations were sent — was shown. And that is the scant respect some American distributors pay to our press people. Either our press people have pawned their self-respect or the people who give these shows are just damn fools who do not know what is ordinary trade courtesy. It is a pity that Americans have to learn courtesy. And I am not surprised that foreign pictures are losing ground in India rather fast. They deserve what they get. MAY BRAIN TWISTER Prize of Rs. 10[To the 1st correct solution Picked up at random from our mail. Mr. Root advertised for a lady typist. After taking tests he appointed Miss Scott. "What was your plan of testing?" I asked Root. "Very simple" said Root. In each subject I gave one mark to the bottom girl, 2 marks to the girl next above her, 3 marks to the next girl, and so on. Miss Scott, whom I appointed, got the best aggregate mark." "How many girls did you examine?" I asked. "A dozen were called, but I don't think they all turned up though." "You don't remember the exact number?" . ."Well, it can be worked out, because no girl got the same mark in two subjects. Subject to that, Miss Scott got as many marks as was possible. Miss Coral, who was bottom, got as few marks as was possible. And Miss Scott was 28 marks ahead of Miss Coral." How many girls took the examination? Only one prize will be given.
