CENSORSHIP MUDDLE IN BENGAL Calcutta, July 20. Strong protests have been made by a section of artists and literateurs in Calcutta against the reported decision of the West Bengal Film Censor Board to act according to the report of the sub-committee appointed for framing rules for controlling film production in the province. These people think that the report which has been submitted to the Board is an unwarranted interference with the film industry. It is learnt that some scripts have been held up by the Censor Board and this has been objected to by authors. With a view to liquidating these differences representatives of the Bengal Motion Picture Association were invited by the Board to discuss the report of the sub-committee and it has been decided that the report should be further considered by a joint committee of representatives of the Association, artistes, film exhibitors, etc. GREAT PRODUCER PASSES AWAY Hollywood, July 23. Mr. David Griffith, pioneer filj producer and star-maker, died hej today of Cerebral haemorrhage i the ripe age of 73. Griffith's first contact with filr was in 1904; he acted for Biograj Studio at what was then a princel pay — five dollars a day. A few weel later the actor was called upon substitute for a director — on tl same pay — and produced his fir picture, which was turned into tl first of a one-reel series entitle "The Adventures of Dolly." From then on he turned his ei ergies to direction and produc some great masterpieces of the si let screen. The most famous of thei were "Intolerence", "Way Dow East", "Orphans of the Storm" an "Birth of a Nation." Griffith quit directing in the earl thirties.
