General — During the first half of the year, Berne reports stated the Swiss market is flooded with pictures. Most exhibitors showed lengthy programs at low prices to meet the situation. Switzerland experienced a boom in theater building. In Zurich a picture house with a large seating capacity to be modeled on American plans was completed. This makes fourteen houses for Zurich. Reports from Geneva show a decided increase of 235 houses in French speaking Switzerland.
American exporters should bear in mind that theaters in Switzerland are not permitted to dis play posters which may excite the imagination of the young, and every poster has to be carefully doctored with ink blots before it can be shown.
In early December, the new national censorship arrangement began to function. For a long time, every community in Switzerland had its own censors, resulting in untold complications and legal and economic difficulties. Flowever, when this fact was brought out at the recent National Assembly in Berne, a national board was authorized. The Government board not only passes on films, but also on all propaganda affecting the pictures.
