General — J. J. Madan, managing director of Madan Theaters, Ltd., the most important theater operators in India, spent many weeks in New York in the fall ot^ 1926. In addition to activities as exhibitors, the Madan interests likewise produce for native consumption.
Madan determined to send lighting equipment to India in order to improve his studio facilities at Calcutta. A number of pictures have been made by him in recent years, but it is now his intention to make 24 a year, beginning in 1927. India has a population of about 350,000,000. Despite this, there are less than 300 theaters, Madan stated. Spectacles hold the greatest appeal for Indian audiences, he added, and for that reason "The Thief of Bagdad" was a pronounced hit, despite the fact that to Eastern eyes many incongruities in Mohammedan custom appeared.
