A more intellectual entertainment than that produced by this apparatus can scarcely be conceived. With the Stereopti- con Dissolving View Apparatus this effect is produced to the greatest advantage. All the lanterns are priced without any reference to slides what- ever — that is, the prices are for the lanterns when complete and ready for use, with lamps and necessary appendages, including printed instructions ; but no slides accompany any of the lanterns at the prices above mentioned. To make the Oxygen Gas. Take 16 ounces of chlorate of potash and crush it so as to be like coarse sand, then mix thoroughly with it 3 ounces of black oxide of manganese ; put the mixture into the retort, and put the retort on the wire stand ; then examine all the tubes, to be sure they are not obstructed ; blow through them ; fill the wash bottle with about one third water, and put the metal tube through the open- ing at the top into the water, and press it rather tightly ; the other end of this tube is united by an elastic tube to a metal tube, which you now put tightly into the opening of the retort ; light the spirit lamp under the copper retort, and in a few minutes bub- bles will begin to pass through the water ; as soon as the bubbles come freely, unite the wash bottle and the gas bag with the piece of elastic tubing. If the bubbles come over too violently, remove the lamp for a few minutes until they come more moderately; when the bubbles begin to come very slowly, it is a sign that the gas is all made ; you then quickly stop the cock at the bag, sepa- rate the wash bottle from the retort, and then remove the spirit lamp. The residuum in the retort should be washed out as soon as cool, and the retort well dried before it is used again. Care should be taken to have good chemicals, free from chips or pieces of paper, or any combustible substance. It generally takes half an hour to make the uas.
