60. It is obvious that the actual number of lines to the inch is variable within wide limits. The only condition to be fulfilled being that the ratio of the rulings in the three gratings shall be so chosen as to bring the fundamental colors on the same vertical. The distance of any color from the central white image is determined by the formula sin a = n\/b, in which \ is the wave-length, n the order of the spectrum, which is always in this case 1, and b the width of one ruling and the grating space. But it is clear that the finer the grating the greater the technical difficulties in registration, etc.
61. It is obvious that the grating must not be looked at direct, or one would see nothing but the central white image ; it must be examined at a slight angle ; or if the eyehole is kept constant, then the grating must be turned.
