Hollywood Studio Magazine was published out of the San Fernando Valley in various iterations (and various titles) from 1966 until 1992. What started as a local organ aimed at the workers of Hollywood ended as a nostalgic fan magazine about Hollywood Then and Now. The various title changes and revisions to its mission reflect not just the economic realities of magazine publishing, but a changing relationship to Hollywood and the industry itself. The earliest issues of Studio Magazine read like a house organ of a steady, entrenched industry documenting the comings and goings and notable events of the San Fernando Valley, with special emphasis on Universal. Fandom first became part of the discourse of the magazine through collecting. The Collectors’ Column page beginning in the early 1970s allowed memorabilia collectors to advertise their wares to each other. In 1983, the founder of the magazine, Dorothy Denny gave over the reins to Ralph Benner, the founder of Tiger Beat. This marks the clear separation between the original publication and its focus on Hollywood production culture and the move toward a publication centered on star narratives and fan culture. In covering the two and a half decades from the collapse of the system to the point where classical movie stars were phantoms instead of living people, the magazine offers insight into the transformation of old Hollywood from a lived reality to a memory to a myth.

One of the most beautiful and worthy affairs I have recently at- tended “The Golden Fashion Adven- ture” was given by the Spastic Chil- dren’s League Incorporated Valley Committee and held in the Los An¬ geles Ballroom of the Century Plaza Hotel. A delicious French luncheon was served which was followed by an all- designer show, California Couturiers — featuring Don Loper; commenta- tor, Holly Mitchell. Professional model & actor Mike Steele of North Hollywood showed what the well- dressed man will be wearing, too. The showcase was set to the music of Manny Harmon against a French background in gold and green (even the menus were printed in French). Two of the Golden Adventure Girls - Mary, daughter of William DeCinces, Universal City Studios Art Director, and cousin Cheryl (granddaughters of Dominic DeCin¬ ces, Still Department)—were among those who presented golden golf balls to the husbands of members at their whistle tables. (Husbands blew whistles each time the models walked by.) Honored guests were the Hon. Gerard Peres, Consul General of France in Los Angeles; Raoul Og¬ iion, le Conseiller Commercial de France; and Mayor Samuel W. Yorty — with their wives. Their table was distinguished by the flags of the United States and France. Actor Phillip Abbott of Tarzana, currently appearing in the FBI se- ries, television, attended with Mrs. Abbott and their son, Nelson-an adorable youngster four years old. Mr. Abbott spoke on the plight of the spastic child. James Hardy, Professional foot- ball Promoter, was a guest with his wife. Since space is limited, it is impos- sible to mention all who partici- pated in this worthy affair. Congratulations to Mrs. James Za- miechowski, President; Mrs. John Hopkins, Show Chairman; the Plan- ning Committees, Mrs. C. T. DeCin¬ ces (invitations and programs), Mrs. William DeCinces-.(decorations) who designed and decorated over eighty fruit-filled urns which were used as centerpieces and later sold by Val¬ ley members; and hostesses.
