Co. offer their congratulations in hiring policies, including 22 deaf mutes. BLOODMOBILE DRIVE JUNE 16 June 16th is the day of Universal’s Bloodmobile Drive. The recurrence of this semi-annual event illustrates the recurring need of obtaining whole blood and blood derivatives. The supply of blood is continuously being depleted; this fact necessitates a restoring of blood, which is the responsibility of each and every individual. Members of the Motion picture and Television industry are asked to support this endeavor by donating a pint of blood on June 16th. This year a fresh and active campaign will be effected for achieving the goal of 300 pints of blood. In return for a pint of blood, donors are eligible to withdraw blood as it is needed ; this privilege is also extended to those who. are willing to contribute but are rejected for one reason or another, as well as to someone in the immediate family of the donor. UNIVERSAL TELECASTS CHANNEL 5 Major daily telecasts are emanating from Universal’s lot as a result of negotiations by the film company and KTLA, Channel 5. Universal’s entire 420 acre property will provide a varied background for the video show, ‘The Johnny Grant Movie.” Grant will interview celebrities from all branches of the entertainment world. The principal studio settings to be utilized in this venture include the multi-million dollar complex, the Visitor’s Entertainment Center, the Sheraton-Universal Hotel and the Studio commissary. The program will be seen Monday through Fridays 9:00 a.m., to 12:00 noon. FAMILY DAY AT THE ZOO Universal Studios Family Day At the Zoo, an initial step towards more family-oriented activities, was a tremendous success. More than 750 persons participated in this event, which included guided tours by the Zoo’s Docents, wandering through the zoo’s many fascinating areas, and enjoying a specially prepared box lunch. ‘The Club Group”, headed by Russ Georgianna was responsible for organizing the picnic. Russ was assisted by Eileen Allen, Betty Anderson, Pauline Cameron, Bill Flotte, Jack Freeman, George Halley, Margrit Jorday, Frank Minitello, Barbara Smith, and Cecil Swartz. BOWLING LEAGUE The Universal Studios Bowling League, consisting of men and women with averages over 150 and 130, respectively, is completing another of their successful seasons. The traditionally high scoring league has fourteen teams this season which play on Monday evenings at the Kirkwood Bowl in Studio City. BICYCLE ACCIDENT One of Universal’s primary sources of transportation, bicycles, were involved in 27 accidents during 1968. Mike Taylor of the Insurance Department stated that twenty-one falls and six collisions occurred involving a total of 1 lid months time lost. One person received a partial permanent disability. * * * NAMES IN THE NEWS New faces to be seen at Universal include ARTHUR D. MURPHY who has come from Variety. Mr. Murphy will be responsible for studying and presenting new methods, operations and techniques involving marketing, exhibition and exploitation of Universal’s motion pictures. BILL BURCH in the Commercial-Industrial Films Division has been joined by STAN OLSEN and TOM CAUFIELD. Also welcomed as a new face is CHERYL LUCKETT, new secretary to Barry Vejar at Decca Distributing. * * * ARNOLD NEMIROFF has been named Director of Business Affairs for Network Programing for Universal Studios. He will administer Universal’s program negotiations with all three networks. BILL BRADEMAN is the father of a new 7 lb. 6 oz. girl, Sabrina. DAN THOMAS, a publicist of 30 years at Universal, has retired with plans to do some serious writing for pictures. Also retiring, after more than 20 years at Decca, is MIKE ROSS. Mike will continue to act as a consultant. Decca’s RAMOS GUILLERMO is visiting his family in Mexico. Page 9
