OVERHEAD DOOR CO., INC. Satisfied Customers Since 1938 7215 Ethel Ave. North Hollywood SANTA MONICA WESTWOOD North Hollywood FIRST SIGN - The first sign reading Tarzana was this gate marker put up by Edgar Rice Burroughs about 1920. Hulbert Burroughs, son of the author, Ron Priestley, of the Tarzana Chamber of Commerce, and Edgar A. Brekke, chamber president, nail the vintage marker on a tree at the ERB offices. The exploration of Tarzan’s family tree via the actors who have brought him to life, will be one of the most unusual reunions in the history of the San Fernando Valley , and certainly Hollywood. THE TARZAN SAGA display is the most most important thing to happen in Tarzana in many years. Former Chamber president, Ron Priestly, and operator of Valley Ice Skating Center in Tarzana, said of the new Tarzan momentos display: “In order to get attention, some cities have resorted to hiring high powered press agents to create legends about their communities. “Here in Tarzana we have a ready-made legend. Thanks to the popularity of Edgar Rice Burroughs and his fictional hero, almost everyone knows who Tarzan is. Now we want them to know about the town named after him. We think THE TARZAN SAGA and reunion will help to bring this about.” Chamber President, Edgar A. Brekke, joined other members recently in arranging for the Bank of America lobby space with Branch Manager, Eugene Morris. During the recent re-decoration of the bank building, jungle oriented colors were selected as a color scheme. Greens, orchure, and other tones such as might have been found in Tarzan’s fictional African home predominate. Above his desk, Morris has a number of original comic strip drawings and renderings of Tarzan -just to remind visitors whose town they are in. Because a whole new generation of youngsters are just discovering the fictional ape-man, Morris has also made arrangements for groups, by special arrangement, to see the exhibit after regular banking hours, with Robert M. Hodes, an official of Edgar Rice Burroughs Inc., giving a personal tour. Hulbert Burroughs, an accomplished photographer in his own right, has made many of his personal portraits of his famous father available for the display and a few of them have been reproduced here. The Wizzard of Tarzana, as Edgar Rice Burroughs has been called, continues to assist the community he helped to found more than 40 years ago. Tarzan’s big reunion and review of the movie family tree is really just another way of reminding millions of people he is still around and going strong. PAGE 2A
