Hollywood Studio Magazine was published out of the San Fernando Valley in various iterations (and various titles) from 1966 until 1992. What started as a local organ aimed at the workers of Hollywood ended as a nostalgic fan magazine about Hollywood Then and Now. The various title changes and revisions to its mission reflect not just the economic realities of magazine publishing, but a changing relationship to Hollywood and the industry itself. The earliest issues of Studio Magazine read like a house organ of a steady, entrenched industry documenting the comings and goings and notable events of the San Fernando Valley, with special emphasis on Universal. Fandom first became part of the discourse of the magazine through collecting. The Collectors’ Column page beginning in the early 1970s allowed memorabilia collectors to advertise their wares to each other. In 1983, the founder of the magazine, Dorothy Denny gave over the reins to Ralph Benner, the founder of Tiger Beat. This marks the clear separation between the original publication and its focus on Hollywood production culture and the move toward a publication centered on star narratives and fan culture. In covering the two and a half decades from the collapse of the system to the point where classical movie stars were phantoms instead of living people, the magazine offers insight into the transformation of old Hollywood from a lived reality to a memory to a myth.

Airion Fromer, however is certainly the exception. A native of Encino, she now has her name in lights at the United Artist Theatre in Westwood, a dream many young girls have, but never realize. There is an old saying in Hollywood, it’s not what you know, it’s who you know. While it is certainly true in many cases, it is not completely true in Airion’s. But living next door to John Derek didn’t hurt either. At the age of nine, Airion was shy and a bit bashful. Derek was making the transition from acting to directing and never forgot the young girl’s face. When she was 14, Derek paid another visit to the Fromer household with a script he was very excited about. He was no longer a neighbor, but he felt that Airion would be perfect for the movie he was about to make titled: “A Boy ... A Girl.” Brushing aside her objections she had never done any professional acting before, Derek insisted she take the part. Just before her 15th birthday, Airion found herself in Carmel on location with Cinema J Productions starring opposite another newcomer, Dino Martin, Jr., the end of this almost storybook tale is the success that has come to Airion in her new career. Will she make another movie? She is not sure, but if the right part comes along . . . METHOD ACTING Called upon by the script to hurl Tina Hedstrom into a waiting automobile for a scene in Alfred Hitchcock’s Universal production of “Topaz,V’ JohnForsythe asked the witty director how forceful to be in his action. “Push her in viciously,” deadpanned Hitchcock, “as if you were a much-married man and she were all the terrible wives you had before your present perfect one.” 4A
