Another round of revolving chairs brought the Head of Sherborne (the school in the movie) to our table. Americans don’t dig the English Public School. They either resent its exclusivity or are intimidated by its intellectual track record. Having encouraged (goaded? needled?) several assorted cousins and nephews through the system I feel thoroughly familiar with Robert W. Powell. Beaming all round, deceptively harmless-looking, woe betide the boy foolish enough to take him at face value. This is the type from whom one receives an encouraging pat on the shoulder which sends one flying into the middle of next week; not to mention the double declensions and irregular verbs doled out with the breakfast porridge. He seems altogether delighted with the good old USA and Americans in general — an attitude most welcome. A jolly old kipper, as a young friend of mine would say. p.s. He retires next year. Five gets you ten he’ll zoom back here the first chance he gets. If so there’ll be many a welcome mat out. Arthur Jacobs’ next is “KYLE”, a futuristic thing written by a young Canadian and set in the next century. I do hope he doesn’t intend to scare the pants off me as he did with “Planet of the Apes” and if rumor has it correctly, will do so even more with , the upcoming “Beneath the Planet of 1 the Apes”. Meantime, dp yourself a favor. Go and see Mr. Chips. Rediscover tenderness, gentleness, honest and real emotions and not a bare backside in sight. Arthur, who from past performance appears to know wots wot, says there is a definite market for the good old-fashioned love story. Of course he’s right. All that naked wobbling flesh and this-is-how-its-done-kids may titillate Tom and Tillie Tract-House for a time - but even they will grow bored with the constant repetition eventually; especially if they rush home to try it for themselves. In the final analysis it is love, the greatest gift of all, which is the answer. Doreen Jameson BABY STAR Patricia Smith of the “Debbie Reynolds Show” played Helen Keller’s mother in a documentary recently and the script called for an infant Helen. Pat volunteered her baby SON. Now the film has racked up a series of awards at the film festivals causing director Noah Keen to comment, “In 20 years that boy may be known as the first ‘Myra Breckinridge.’ ”
