Science Fiction Academy's Telecast STAR WARS “STAR WARS” WINS 8 AWARDS AT “SCIENCE FICTION FILM AWARDS”: BURNS, FOSTER, BEST ACTOR, ACTRESS The force was with “Star Wars” producers Saturday night (Jan. 21) as the film picked up the lion’s share of awards at the 1977 “Science Fiction Film Awards”, telecast on KTLA. “Star Wars” won eight of the 13 awards presented by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films, including: Best Science Fiction Film; Best Special Effects (John Drykstra and John Stears); Best Supporting Actor (Alec Guiness); Best Make-up (Rick Baker and Stuart Freeborn); Best Costumes (John Mollo) and Best Writing (George Lucas). Lucas. who also directed “Star “BAD” STAR, Susan Tyrrell (center) displays her “Best Supporting Actress” award she won for her performance in the film, “Bad”. “Star Wars” villian ‘Lord Darth Vader and actress Melinda Dillon made the presentation to Miss Tyrrell during the 1977 “Science Fiction Film Awards” telecast on KTLA (Channel 5), Saturday, Jan. 21. 28— SCIENCE FICTION Winner of Eight Awards ACCEPTING FOR: Actor Mark Hamill of “Star Wars” accepted co-star Alec Guiness’ ‘best supporting actor” award at the Science Fiction Film Awards, telecast on KTLA, Saturday, Jan. 21. It was one of the eight awards presented to “Star Wars” at the 5th annual presentation of the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films. Wars’, tied with Steven Spielberg, “Close Encounters of the Third Kind”, for the category of Best Director. Composer, John Williams received a special “Best Music” award for scoring the original music for both “Star Wars” and “Close Encounters of the Third Kind”. Other trophies presented at the 5th annual “Science Fiction Film Awards”, presided over by William Shatner and Karen Black, went to: Best Supporting Actress: Susan Tyrrell (“Bad”).
