Film Cement (J. R. Janssen, St. Louis, Mo.)
The formula for film cement to he used with amateur or sub-standard films is as follows :
Ethyl Acetate 3j4 oz.
Acetone 3^4 oz.
Acetate base (film clippings
free of emulsion) 30 gr.
Acetic Acid 1 oz.
Ehe film clippings mentioned must be from an acetate base film ; you cannot use still film or 35mm film base, as that is nitrate base. Use any of your 8mm or 16mm scrap film, but be sure the emulsion is removed. You can remove the emulsion by soaking in water; warmer water will hasten the process. You can then wipe it off with a cloth. Dry before using in your cement.
Out-of-focus Projection (Le Roy
Pratt, Washington, Iowa)
Eight mm film, when turned end to end and then turned over for trick work such as you mention, will always be out of focus. The reason is that your emulsion is now on the other side of the film. The depth of focus is so shallow that even this slight difference causes 8mm or even 16mm film to go out of focus.
Fixed Focus Lens (J. W. Pumphrey, Panama City, Fla.)
The fixed focus lens you mention for your Victor No. 3 camera will give you very good satisfaction. As a beginner yon will find it convenient, as it gives you just one thing less to worry about — focus. For real close-closeups it may be necessary to use a portrait attachment. This is an auxiliary lens which is placed in front of your regular lens. You would also have to use this sort of lens for titles or animated work closeup.
Reversing Panchromatic
(S. J. Moore, San Diego, Calif.)
Dupont No. 314 and No. 317 panchromatic emulsions can be reversed. Be sure to use a contrasty developer or it will come out too soft.
The Scheiner speed rating for No.
PROBLEM
314 is 24 for outdoors and 21 indoors. The Scheiner rating for No. 317 is 20 outdoors and 1 8 indoors.
Weak Developer (J. Manson,
Provo, Lffah)
Developers will weaken if left exposed to the air. It is difficult to say how many feet of film can be run through a batch of developer. If you were putting it all through in one day, the chances are you could develop from 1,000 to 2,000 ft. of film. If the solution stands, air will deteriorate it. Keep your solutions corked tightly.
There is a paint put out by Eastman Kodak Company that is suitable for painting racks. It is acid resisting. We would suggest you contact your photographic dealer. He undoubtedly carries a supply of acid-resisting paint.
Meter Reading (R. C. Wolland, Long Beach, Calif.)
If you use the G. E. Meter with the hood it is natural that you get a bigger opening than with the Weston Meter. The reason for this is that with the hood the G. E. Meter has an angle of about 30 degrees, which is about the same as your lens. The angle of the Weston meter is approximately 60 degrees. The 60-degree angle being greater lets in more light and will therefore give you a smaller reading.
Non-Iialation Film (T. V. Nash, Kaufman, Texas)
There is no way in which you can make a clear base film, non-halation. This non-halation coating is either floated on the polished side of the film or it is impregnated during fabrication in the silver and is later removed with chemicals.
The DuPont No. 314 16mm film is panchromatic.
Desensitizer ( Ralph Snell,
N. Tonowanda, N. Y. )
You prepare the Agfa Pinkyptol Desensitizer as follows :
Pinkytol Green 145 grains
Water to mix 16 ounces
For use, dilute one part stock desensitizing solution with 10 parts water, immerse film in total darkness for two minutes at 65 degrees F. Development may then be carried out in bright red light, Agfa safe light filter No. 107 with a 25-watt lamp. The sensitizer does not affect the film. The image will not be damaged by it.
