This process has been described before in this magazine, but we shall repeat it again briefly for those who missed it or who have become readers since it appeared. Figure 4 shows how a title was made to appear on a movie screen. The title travels upward, where it disappears at the top of the screen, while the background slowly moves from left to right. Such an effect is possible when celluloid negative backgrounds are used. The movie screen was set up as desired and the screen portion was covered with a piece of black cloth — deep pile cotton velvet to be exact, but any black cloth should work as well. The screen, together with a bit of the room showing on all sides, was photographed on a piece of process film with a still camera. The area included on the film was just the size of the area in the titler. Slight under-exposure was given the shot, and the film was developed under a bright safelight. Any film developer is usable, D-72 diluted 1 :4 being a typical combination. As soon as the image appears on the process film, it is rinsed and placed in the hypo. Let us again stress those developing directions : As soon as the image appears, or certainly not more than 5 seconds later, the film is rinsed and fixed. A good background of this type should look almost transparent when viewed to the light. When placed upon a piece of white paper, the negative image should reveal itself clearly, but should not be darker than a medium grey at any spot. When the negative is dry, a mask is made out of a piece of white paper, the opening corresponding exactly to the blank portion of the negative which resembles the movie screen. This paper mask is now taped firmly to the celluloid negative, care being taken to see that opening and screen coincide. This entire assembly is now placed over the title-wording, and of course the paper mask will let the title show through only on the movie screen area. The whole works is now photographed Movie fans who use Fotoshop’s 16mm Express Super Pan constantly tell us with pride of the amazing results they achieve with this fast, finegrain film, even with inexpensive lenses.
