"How I Did It" would not have entertained an unpublished story, and screen authors knew better than to take their material to her for a reading. But at last she has seen the light, and realizes that the successful photoplays of the future will come from the pen of writers who are famil- iar with the screen and know how to write for it. Nine of the biggest successes last year were original productions from original stories. The pictures grossed approximately $500,000 and $750,000 each. In the future the screen author will be supreme. At present producers are employing the best literary talent obtain- able to write their stories. Some of these writers are being paid as much as $75,000 a year. Isn't that goal worth striving for, dear reader? Producers are paying as high as $10,000 for an original script today, and they are willing to pay even more in order to get what they want. However, bear in mind that the writers who are receiving these big prices for their stories are the ones who spend care, thought and time in the development of their work. 126
