"How I Did It" thoroughfare. A day or so ahead of time the technical department of the studio puts an artist to work painting the mountains that are required on a piece of glass about five feet by seven. The mountain range is painted in oils on the centre of the glass so that the painted area takes up about three or four feet by one foot. When the artist has completed his work the camera is focused properly on the street, and the glass with its painted mountains is placed about six feet in front of the lens and ar- ranged so that when the cameraman looks through his finder he can see a mountainous background in perfect position. When these "takes" are projected on the screen it is practi- cally impossible for even a trained eye to dis- cover the illusion. The last time I saw them working the "glass" was at a studio where they were utiliz- ing the tank as an outdoor swimming pool of a millionaire's home. The camera was shoot- ing toward the house, which was indeed pala- tial, only it was but one story high, strangely enough. I was just wondering why the resi- 152
