IN view of the difficulties that beset even the most talented and skillful of cameramen in keeping our famous stars in focus at all times, it may seem hazardous to suggest that there is such a thing as depth of focus. The question, however, is one that cannot be ignored entirely. Ultrarapid lenses in the longer focal lengths that have been used in the past for close-up work demanding very little in the way of depth of focus have now blossomed out as general purpose lenses of which a great deal will be expected, especially the ability to produce satisfactory definition of more than one plane in the picture. That pictures made on wide film may subsequently be reduced to standard size film in the positive print in no way alleviates this condition.
