December, 1930 The INTERNATIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER Seven Universal's "The White Captive" troop going on location up the viver to Quantan, north of Singapore a typhoon tearing around in their general neighborhood. The captain explained to the photographer how in these days of radio often it is possible to give the slip to these terrors of the sea — to outmaneuver them, so to speak. It was not long after when a ship wirelessed that it was in the blow, gave its position and the wind's direction, and the point on the Chinese coast where the storm was expected to hit and rebound to sea like a billiard ball against its cushion. The captain turned sharply to port and went to sea for a hundred miles, from that point gradually circling to the north. As a result the Russia got only the tail of the blow. It was during this latter muss, however, when the ship was startled by the cry of "Man overboard!" The wheel was thrown over so sharply the vessel heeled away over and the water poured on to the decks. Then came word it was a woman that had left the ship, but it was impossible to do anything to help her as she could not be seen. A life preserver was thrown over in order to get the drift. Tale of Two Great Heroes At this point Physioc, with a glass in his hand at the time the cry was sent out, was fortunate enough to spot the woman in the water. Asking the discoverer to keep the woman in the field of his glass and assigning the first officer to stay with him, the skipper hurried to the wheel to stick with the quartermaster. The ship was maneuvered in the direction of the woman. Four boats were lowered, but were no sooner in the water than they were blown away from the direction they wanted to reach. Finally the skipper got the ship so that the victim was in its lee and partly protected from the gale. All this time the ship's cook had been very uneasy. Finally he announced to the first officer he was going over after the helpless woman. He was very promptly told a man with a wife and kiddies would not be permitted to do any such thing, that some one else would be found. But when no one else was found the cook mounted the rail and dived into the water. When eventually the cook reached the woman, a Russian of powerful physique, as she must have been still to be on the top of the water, she grabbed her rescuer by the throat and was drowning him. It was at this stage of the impending double tragedy a Chinese sailor quietly slipped over the side and started his battle to reach the two. He succeeded. Between the two men the woman was brought under the lee of the Russia, and a boat was lowered to pick them up. Over an hour was required to corral the four boats that had been first (Continued on Page 38) On the river in the thick of the jungle.
