Joined the Industry in 1905, on the exhibiting side, and built the Scala and Futurist Theatres, Birmingham, and now controls a circuit of over 20 kinemas in various towns. Was associated with the purchase of the Palace, London, for £400, 000. Is a strong advocate of first-class music, and was a pioneer in this form of entertainment in the kinema. E. E. Lyons.
Entered the Industry in 1910 with the Academy, Brighton, the rebuilding of which in 191 3 made him a pioneer of large capacity houses. The policy was carried on when as managing director of Biocolor he developed a circuit which included the Dalston ; the New Savoy, Glasgow ; New Grand, Glasgow ; Holloway, Empire ; Peckham Hippodrome, and others to the number of 21 in all. As a ready speaker he has taken a prominent part in the development of British Films, the reciprocity proposals, opposition to the compulsory quota, and in many benevolent and charitable works with which the Industry has been associated. On General Committee of the C.E.A. for many years, the Council of the Trade Benevolent Fund, and for two years chairman of the London and Home Counties Branch of the C.E.A. with Senator Guthrie founded British Dominions Films Pty. , Ltd.. whose special objects are for the distribution of British films throughout Australia. John Maxwell.
[Chairman and Managing Director, British International Pictures, Ltd.) Entered the film business in 1912 as an exhibitor. Was formerly a solicitor in Scotland. Later he became actively interested in Wardour Films, Ltd., and as Chairman of that company has done much to make it the foremost independent renting house in the trade. Next he turned his attention to film production and was the moving light in the creation of British International Pictures, Ltd., of which he is now Chairman and Managing Director. George Fergus McDonald.
[Ex-President, C.E.A.] Born in Banffshire in 1873, Coun. McDonald at an early age removed to Walsall with his parents, and, on completion of apprenticeship, commenced business in that town. Attracted to the kinematograph Industry, he built the Rookery Picture House, Handsworth, of which he is sole proprietor. He is also part owner of the Coliseum, Saltley, Birmingham, and interested in new Kingsway Cinema at King's Heath, Birmingham. Ex-president of the Birmingham and Midland Counties Branch of C.E.A., and is a member of the joint committee of Birmingham Justices and the C.E.A., and representative, since November, 191 9, of Sandwell ward on the Birmingham City Council . [Managing Director of the Mid. Yorkshire Entertainments, Ltd.] Born at West Hartlepool in 1883, C. P. Metcalfe first entered the exhibiting business in 1909, and opened the first twice nightly picture hall in Leeds. He was also the convener of the meeting at which it was decided to form the Yorkshire Branch of the C.E.A. He is Managing Director of the Mid. Yorkshire Entertainments, Ltd..
