Overseas. 577 The increase of the State's direct tax on ticket sales from 40 per cent, to 60 per cent, made no appreciable difference to business in Denmark during 1946. In fact, the past year has shown that there is a definite shortage of kinemas, and the Government, aware of the position, was preparing to grant licences for the building of new theatres. There are 430 kinemas in Denmark with a total seating capacity of 120,108, which represents one seat for every 32 members of the population. In Copenhagen there are 52 kinemas, with total seating capacity 37,701. Distributors have had considerable difficulty in placing their products. The shortage of release houses has resulted in longer runs than were normal in 1939, and the position is such that films are getting first release in kinemas which were considered to be second or third-run houses. Several big " A " pictures have been released in the provinces, before being shown in the Metropolis — something unheard-of before the war. British pictures steadily forged ahead and consolidated their position in the Danish market. Up to September, when the restrictions on the import of American products were lifted, British films headed the list with 58 releases out of a total of 147. Of the remainder, 33 were American, 19 Swedish, 18 French, 11 Danish, 7 Russian, and 1 Norwegian.
