A NNUAL kinema attendances in Ecuador are estimated to be between ■**■ 3 to 4 million ; the total population is over 3 million. There are approximately 55 theatres in the country with total seating capacity of 55,500. All are wired for sound.
Annual gross incomes for Quito, the capital, are estimated to be about £33,500, and for Guayaquil (the largest city) and the rest of the country approximately £30,600 each. About 80 per cent, of the total is derived from U.S. productions. Eight per cent, of the gross is taken by the Government.
There are at present no quota or contingent laws, and no preference is given to films of any one country. About 70 per cent, of the films shown in Ecuador are U.S., 10 per cent. Mexican, 10 per cent. Argentinian and 10 per cent. British, French, Russian and others.
Censorship committees have been set up by the Ministry of Education for the purpose of examining films with regard to their political contents. Censorship of the moral values of a film is left to the judgment of the distributors. Films are either accepted or rejected, but never cut. Educational films are free from censorship.
