Wollenberg AN embargo on the unrestricted importation of films from Dec. 31, 1946 *"*■ and new legislation stipulating that three weeks' screentime in every quarter — a minimum of 84 days a year — shall be reserved for home production are new measures introduced by the Government in Italy. The new legislation also provides for an increase by 300,000,000 lire in the funds allocated to the Film Credit Institute, through the medium of which part of the State entertainment tax is returned to Italian producers. If new taxation measures, under consideration, become valid, an additional 500,000,000 lire will be derived from the Italian box-office. The total of theatre grosses during 1946 is authoritatively estimated at 14,000 million lire, as compared with 6,500 million in 1945, when 334,000,000 attendances were recorded. This increase in takings is not only due to the opening of new kinemas, but to currency inflation. Entertainment tax for 1946 amounted to 3,000 million lire. In the period from August 1, 1945, to October 30, 1946, 62 feature films were produced ; a further 9 films were then on the floor and 10 under preparation. Takings of this Italian production output are estimated at 1,500 million lire. At the same time, production costs rose considerably during 1946; according to the report of ANICA, the trade organisation, production expenses at the beginning of 1946 had increased to 15 times the amount of 1942. Preventive censorship is to be abolished. PRODUCERS AND DISTRIBUTORS. Agic (Azienda Generale Industriali Cinemato grafici), Rome. Alfa Film, Via Po 22, Rome. Amato Film, Via Sistina 91, Rome.
