The total of kinemas is approximately 1,150. Admission prices range from 2 to 6 pesos (2s. to 6s.) and from 4 to 6 pesos in first-run theatres. Sixty per cent, of the total receipts are derived from Mexico City, the capital. Entertainment taxes are 15 per cent, of the grosses to the Federal Government and 13 per cent, to the respective federal states. Kinemas by law are divided into various categories ; class AA kinemas must show one Mexican film at least every two months. The U.S. share of screen time has been estimated at 80 per cent., but Mexican production has steadily been gaining ground during the last five years, and it is estimated that 50 per cent, of the first run releases now are Mexican. Of the 200 features announced for production in 1946, 64 had been completed within the first six months of 1946, as compared with a total of 87 features during 1945. The average cost was 85,000 dollars (^21,000 approx.) In the course of 1946, however, symptoms of a crisis due to rising production costs became apparent. With the newly elected President, Miguel Aleman, who took office in December, 1946, new far-reaching protective legislation is certain for 1947. So far, a difference is made in import duties with regard to Spanish and English dialogue films ; the duty on the former is 8 pesos per kilo and on the latter 20 pesos. Mexican films are produced with a view to export with bi-lingual productions (Spanish and English) being turned out. In addition to the Clasa and Azteca Studios with 10 and 18 stages respectively, the Churubuscu Studios — 14 stages — and the Tepeyac Studios — 12 stages — were completed in 1946. TRADE ORGANISATIONS.
