CHILE
THE Direction General de Informacion y Cultura (General Bureau of Information and Culture), is the Government Department dealing with the him industry.
Kinemas : There are 312 theatres in Chile, but only 300 were operating in 1947. The largest of the circuits are the Organizacion Teatral Cinem?tografica Martinez y Cia. (60 bouses), Cines Unidos (5), Cia. Nacional de Teatros (16) Organizacion Teatral Chilena (7), Cia. Chilena de Espsctaculos (6), Pairoa (5), and Empresa Rojas Barbieri (3).
Censorship : The Board of Film Censors, a department of the General Bureau of Information and Culture, is responsible for censorship. A decree published in July, 1946, authorises the Director General of Information and Culture to p;rmit representatives of moral or religious organisations to be present during the censorship of films. Once a film has been passed by the Board, it cannot be banned or suspended by any local authorities. Censored films fall into three categories : ( 1 ) f or adults and children ; (2) for adults only ; (3) for adults but not recommended for young ladies.
Quota : In Its Budget of Exchange for 1947, the Chilean Government approved the sum of 1,000,000 dollars for the import of foreign films, but it is expected that this quota will be reduced to 8 >o,o 30 dollars.
Production : The only modern studios in the country are those of Chile Films, controlled by the Fomento Corporation. Nine full length features were made during 1946. During the first quirter of 1947 only 3 full length features were produced. A new newsreel under the name of " Sinopsis del Tiempo " appeared
during the year, and it is partly financed by the subjects appearing in its weekly edition. — H.
