EAST AFRICA TT is difficult to assess the total number of ■■■ static and mobile kinemas in the vast areas of Central Africa. In each of the main centres there are modern theatres catering primarily for European audiences and also for Indian patrons, and there are a number of mobile outfits for the native population. These latter are chiefly 16 mm. Nairobi, Kenya's largest centre, has four European kinemas and two Indian. Other important centres in East Africa well catered for are Mombasa, Dar es Salaam, Tanga, Zanzibar, Kisumu, Eldoret, Jinja, Kampala, and Nakuru. Distribution is controlled mainly by African Consolidated Films of Johannesburg, but offices in Nairobi are also maintained by 20th Century Fox, United Artists and M-G-M. Modest but complete production facilities with standard and 16 mm. are offered in Nairobi bv East African Sound Studios consisting of a small Sound stage (25,000 eft.) with sound on film and sound on disc recording with Bell and Howell and Newman Sinclair, and, for 16 mm. Cine Kodak cameras.
