HUNGARY HPHE motion picture business is controlled to ■*■ an ever-increasing degree by the main political parties and many independent concerns are therefore finding competition too heavy. As a result, there is considerable Government jurisdiction as regards distribution, exhibition and production. Censorship and licensing are controlled by the Ministry of the Interior ; exports and imports by the Ministry of Commerce ; foreign exchange by the Foreign Trade Bureau ; film studios by the Ministry of Industry ; and educational and documentary production by the Ministry of Public Education. There are 550 theatres, but notwithstanding recent rebuilding, Hungary is still considerably under-seated. Biggest circuit comprises 270 kinemas and is controlled by MAFIRT, which is also the largest distributing house. Other circuits are also owned by political parties. Films distributed 1946/47 numbered 199, as follows : Hungary, 5 ; Russia, 38 ; Great Britain, 5 ; U.S.A., 108 ; France, 37 ; other countries, 6. Censorship : All films are subject to State Film Censorship and are judged on moral, religious and political standards. Fee : 60 florins per meter. Taxation : 52 per cent, on town kinemas, 47 per cent, in the country, and where Hungarian films are exhibited, 26 per cent. Customs duty on raw stock amounts to 400 florins per 100 kilog. There are two studios — Hunnia (6 stages) and the M.F.I. (1 stage) — occupied by the Radio Company. Production is beginning to be organised by the political parties. During the year, 40 documentary and short films were made. Educational subjects are made by the Ministry of Education.
