INDIA AND PAKISTAN THE partition of India had severe repercussions on the prosperity of the Industry which reached its peak during the war years, and particularly in the period 1942 to 1945, when the total gross income touched the record figure of Rs. 12,82 lakhs. This figure has dropped since the partition to about Rs. 3,85 lakhs in India and Rs. 45 lakhs in Pakistan. Generally speaking it is anticipated that gross film income for the two Lominions will barely exceed Rs. 300 1 akhs for the next two years. India The Ministry of Industry and Supplies controls all matters relating to the Indian film Industry, with Home Affairs responsible for censorship and finance and Commerce for the import of foreign films. Kinemas : There are 1,384 35-mm. kinemas and about 300 mobile outfits. There are no 16-mm. static situations, but there are about 30 mobile set-ups. Main circuits are Western India Theatres, Ltd., Tardeo, Bombay, with 35 theatres, Deccan Theatres, Belgaum (12), Rajkamal, Ltd., Parel, Bombay (12), Associated Bombay Theatres (6). Admission prices : These range from As. 5 to Rs. 3 according to district, etc. Taxes are roughly about 10 per cent, in Assam, 20 per cent, in Sind and Bihar, 25 per cent, in Bombay, Bengal, the Central Provinces and Berar, 30 per cent, in the United Provinces and 30 to 35 per cent, in Madras. The 234 features shown in Bombay, Calcutta and Madras, included 100 home-produced subjects, 122 American and 12 British. During 1947, there were imported 187 American features, 16 serials and three with Hindustani narration, and 85 16-mm. features. During the same period 25 British and seven U.S.S.R. features were also imported. Film censorship is governed by the Cinemato graph Act of 1918, and is carried out by the
