THE Industry is controlled by the Central Cinematographic office at the Presidency of the Council of Cabinet Ministers. There are four sections : Production, in charge of Dr. Annibale Scicluna Sorge. vice-president of the Central office ; General affairs (Dr. Girolamo < ella Valle) ; Management and Revision (Dr Gianni de Tommasi) ; and Foreign trade (Dr. Benito Orta).
There are 6,200 kinemas showing 35-mm. and 500 showing 16-mm. programmes. Total seating capacitv, 3,000,000 persons.
Chief circuits' are E.N.LC. (60) and E.C.I. (80).
Total cash admissions during 1947 is estimated as 25,000,000,000 lire, of which about 4,000,000,000 lire represent takings on Italian films. In 1945, admissions were 6,493,000,000 lire, and in 1946, 13,000,000,000 lire.
Admission taxes : Up to 20 lire (in practice this low price is non-existent), 15 per cent. ; from 20 to 60 lire, 35 per cent. ; above 60 lire, 50 per cent.
The " Associazione Nazionale Industrie Cinematografiche " (A.N.I. C.A.) combines the interests of both producers and distributors.
Feature production in 1947 was 66 subjects. There has been a steep rise in production costs, super films cost from 150 — 300,000,000 lire, "A" films 80 — 150,000,000 lire; and " B " films, 30 — 50,000,000 lire.
There are 14 studios with some 50 floors, the capacity of which is in the neighbourhood of 120 features. Studios in operation are : —

Legislation. — Every Italian film over 2,000 metres long shown before December 31, 1949, will receive a subsidy equivalent to 10 per cent, of gross takings this film secures during four years of showing. Such films will receive additional 6 per cent, grant if the Technical Committee finds that they possess exceptional cultural and artistic value.
