PERU HpHE Government Department responsible for film matters in Peru is the Direccion de Publicidad del Ministerio de Gobierno ('Seccion Cine) — the Publicity Department of the Ministry of the Interior, Cinema Section. Admission prices : Matinees in first-run kinemas in Lima, Callao and suburbs, 1.50 soles (approx. is.), 1. 00 sol, 0.60 sol and 0.50 sol ; afternoon and evening, 2.00 soles, (about is. 4c!.), 1.50 soles, 0.80 sol and 0.60 sol. Other theatres; matinees from 0.30 sol to 1. 00 sol ; afternoon and evening, from 0.40 sol to 1.50 soles. These prices do not include the 10 per cent municipal tax. There is a 10 per cent tax on the gross income of film distributors in Peru. The total number of feature films shown in Peru during 1946 was 449. By far the largest number of films shown were U.S., with Mexico in the second place. Film censorship in Peru comes under the Censorship Board, on which the Peruvian Accion Catolica is represented. Films are classified as follows : (1) films unsuitable for children ; (2) films suitable for children under 15 as well as over ; (3) films for adults only and (4) films unsuitable for "unmarried young women." Customs : There is an import duty of 12 soles per kilogram of film, plus 20 per cent according to special regulation No. 9467 ; 1 per cent for the encouragement of art ; 2 per cent ad valorem tax computable on a minimum value of 30 soles per kilo, with 20 per cent surcharge ; 1 per cent ad valorem tax, allocated to a fund for the unemployed, with an additional charge on the weight of the container ; 4 soles per metric ton. Quota : There is no restrictive or protective legislation. Production : Only two major films were produced during 1947.
