There are 21 distributors including agencies of most of the American producers. Kinemas : 407 of which 52 are in Manila. Annual admissions : 100,000,000. Production : Of the 14 native production companies, four own studios. Some 24 films were produced in 1947. Education : Production of educational and scientific films is non-existent. The United States Information Service with portable set-ups provide shows in schools, hospitals and factories or in outdoor situations. POLAND THE film industry was nationalised in 1945 when the State enterprise film Polski was formed and functions under the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts. Kinemas : 560. Seating capacity : 23,000. Annual admissions : 20,000,000. Distribution is handled by the Central Bureau of Film Hire. In 1945-46 films were imported as follows : U.S.S.R. 40 ; France 43 ; Sweden 10 ; Switzerland 2 ; U.S.A. a few. In 1947 permits were granted for the entrv of 40 British and 65 American films and a number from individual French and other producers. Production : One studio at Lcdz. The studio at Warsaw destroyed in the war is to be rebuilt with four stages. Films made in 1947 include two features, 150 newsreels and long documentaries and about 50 shorts. The Scientific Film Institute at Lodz has about 500 16mm. silent and 10 — 20 mobile sound projectors. PORTUGAL '"jPHE main Government Department dealing A with films is the Secretariado Nacional de Informacao, Cultura Popular e Turismo in Lisbon. There is a sub-division of Espectaculos and again a section for the kinema. This Department awards three prizes annually for the best Portuguese films. It also supervises the application of the quota law of January 1947, by which one week in six has to be reserved for the howing of home-produced films. A special tax is payable by theatres on all foreign films. Customs and other duties represent about 25 per cent, of the revenues of the industry— exhibitors' admission taxes, etc., amount to about 30 per cent. The Inspeccao Geral dos Espectaculos and the Ministry of National Education, Lisbon, issues the special licenses for imported films. Latest statistics show that during the first six months of 1947, 173 films had their first run in Lisbon. Six of them were Portuguese, the rest including: 9 British, 116 U.S., 13 French, 9 Italian, 5 Spanish, 5 German, 3 Swedish, 3 Brazilian, 2 Argentine and 2 SpanishPortuguese co-productions. The number of theatres in operation is 290 approximately.
