Number of kinemas (January 1, 1947), 2,462, owned by some 963 companies and individuals (434). Many kinemas are controlled by producer-renter companies such as Svensk Filmindustri, which controls 94 houses. Admission taxes are 10 per cent, up to one krona ; 30 per cent, on all others.
A total of 265 films were shown during 1947; origin of which were U.S.A., 170 ; Sweden, 35 ; U.K.. 23 ; France, 19 ; Russia, 6 ; Denmark, 5. Imposition of a 50 per cent, cut in remittances to U.S.A. has barely affected the import of AmerLan products. Customs fees are 15.75 krona per kilo.
Every film has to be submitted for censorship and classifications are White Seal (banned) ; Red Seal (general audiences) ; and Yellow Seal (adults only). Scenes inciting to brutality, suggesting dangerous excitement or encouraging, disrespect for the law are subject to censorship.
Some 50 films were produced during 1947, but few were in the world market class. Among the latter are Svensk's " Kvinna Utan Ansikte " (" Woman Without Face ") and Europa's " Det Vackraste pa Jorden " ("The Most Beautiful on Earth ").
Both Svensk and Europa possess special departments dealing with educational films.
There are three big studios operating in Stockholm : Svensk Filmindustri, at Rasunda ; Europa Film Co., at Sundbyberg ; and the Centrum Studios, at Eastend (Stockholm). There are also some small studios owned by other producers. Sandrew-Bauman Film Co. is operating at Novilla, and Film AB Lux, in Stockholm, is no longer an independent company, its productions being handled by Kungs Film Co. Other companies which have ceased to function are Askania Film, and Saffa Distribution AB. — Sven G. Winquist.
