490 The Kinematograph Year Book. developments in equipment have been briefly reviewed. While some of the equipment admittedly makes for ease of manipulation, others — notably television equipment — will demand a standard of skill rarely found today in the projection room. Although, the standard of showmanship in the kinema is far superior to that of a few years ago, it is still not without shortcomings. What is being done to assure an adequate standard of skill and knowledge on the part of the projectionist ? The answer is at present, nothing. A couple of years ago, the C.E.A. approved a scheme — ^and, furthermore, agreed to meet its not inconsiderable cost — for the inauguration BRITISH STANDARDS 880 : 1949— Concert Pitch (revision) 1479 : 1948— Use of Sound Level Meters. 1488 : 1948— Test-films for 16mm. At the time of writing, counterproposals by the N.A.T.K.E. await the consideration of the C.E.A., and it is hoped that an apprenticeship scheme may be shortly launched. Meanwhile, in defeated Germany — ■ actually in Berlin, divided by international dissension — a well-equipped projection school is organised, where theory and practice are taught to interested projectionists (44). The British exhibitor has shown his desire for a similar scheme : seemingly it is the projectionist who has hitherto lagged behind, notwithstanding that nothing is better calculated to enhance his status and assist his career.
