- Description:
- Like many of the English-language magazines in our library, La Cinématographie française straddles the dividing lines that exist today within film journalism. Production notices, advertisements, and stills cater to the cinephile eagerly awaiting new releases, while business directories and job listings appeal to filmmakers both amateur and professional. The magazine is dominated, though, by articles that would now be confined to a trade journal, including domestic and international box office reports and profiles of important industry players. La Cinématographie française also includes a handful of reviews. This volume should be essential reading for anyone researching 1930s European film culture. Highlights include a feature on Adolph Zukor and his collaboration with the French film industry, a piece on Ufa's purchase and inadvertent 'Germanization' of Mayerling (1936, Anatole Litvak) in Brazil, and several articles on Gaumont Britain's financial problems. -- Joseph Pomp, 2013
