There are also the new version of L’Argent, from the novel by Zola, Le Grand Refrain, La Flamme, La Vie est à Nous, La Brigade en Jupons, Le Roman d’un Tricheur by Sacha Guitry, and Une Gueule en Or. Then in France and Abroad work is proceeding on the production of Le Vagabond Bien-Aimé with Maurice Chevalier, Donogoo, Pattes de Mouches, Mcirika, La Souris Bleue and Le Cœur dispose. None of these films are of a sombre character. They are ail gay and full of entertainment destined to suit different fastes and so touch ail cinemagoers. A few films are accompanied by plenty of music, songs and dances. FILMS IN PREPARATION It is to be noted that during the last eighteen months, ont of 150 films announcéd, 100 hâve been produced. The producers bave thus kept much to their word. But during the three months, out of 18 films announcéd as about to be produced, only 4 are really in the making. These are Topaze, Marinella, Le Grand Refrain, and Vertiges d’un Soir — now called La Peur. Yet at the end of December we cited 40 films announced. What has become of the projects? When are we to hear that Maya, Le Voleur Le joyeux Bach dans son nouveau film Bach Détective de Femmes, Les Hommes Nouveaux, together with others named above, are really in the making? We want to see — as we know that the public will appreciate them, and therefore the exhihitors profit by their showing — Les Hommes Nouveaux, announcéd by Alexandre Kamenka, to be directed by Marcel L’Herbier, and to feature Harry Baur. Also La Belle Equipe, directed by Julien Üuvivier, Port-Arthur, by Farkas, Les Loups entre eux, Rigolboche, Monsieur Personne, Brigade Mondaine, and Tziganes, Aventures de Moutonnet, Au Service du Tzar, Nitchevo, by Baroncelli, Les Deux Gosses and Strychnine, not to mention other films which bave been mentioned. The exhibitors want to hâve assurance that the films of which they hâve heard, and of which the public may hâve read notes in the fan-papers, are really and truly to be made. Otherwise an uncomfortable sense of insecurity of production arises, and appetites are whetted to no purpose. We hâve enough worry with the Censorship, the Government régulations and impositions, etc., outside the working of the film industry itself, to bear déception in productions announcéd, delays, and other things which hamper, restrict and do harm to the industry, not only to we ourselves in France, but to the eyes of the world of film production. As a film producing country — and the first, at that — France ought not to trail behind America or Great Britain, but maintain lier position, regained at very great effort and cost. Lucie Derain.
