Fils d'un grand commerçant en volailles, il fit ses études au collège jésuite Saint-Ignace, à Londres, puis étudia le génie civil à l'Université de Londres.
Il fait du cinéma depuis 1920.
Réalisateur, scénariste, directeur de production, il fonde en 1923 avec Victor Saville et Michael Balcon la firme Gainsborough. Marié en 1925 avec l'écrivain Aima Reville, connu depuis Blackmail, consacré par The Lady Vanishes, il réside aux États-L'nis depuis 1940.
