Quelque temps après l'avoir dirigée dans plusieurs films Paramount — Tricheuse ( Manhandled) en particulier — Allan Dwan déclara que Gloria Swanson « était une STAR pour trois ans ». Cinq années plus tard, il était pourtant encore appelé pour mettre en scène ce délicieux What a Widow! (1) où Gloria se montre aussi gaie et aussi jeune qu'à ses débuts chez l'excellent Mack Sennett — aussi jeune, peut-être pas à la lettre, mais combien plus touchante que la petite fille d'alors. Cependant Gloria Swanson n'est en effet plus cette femme qui dominait tout le cinéma, en face de trois ou quatre rivales, et que l'on voyait presque sans cesse dans des films parfois prétentieux, faux ou ennuyeux, mais à travers lesquels on ne la quittait pas des yeux.
