Ce film n'eût sans doute pu être fait avant Sous les toits de Paris, et aussi Le Roi des Resquilleurs; il n'en montre pas moins combien, avec le même Préjean et un bon compère dans le rôle du camelot, Sous les toits pouvait facilement devenir plus vivant et plus robuste ; combien Le Roi des Resquilleurs, interprété par des gens plus avenants et mieux dirigés, pouvait avoir plus d'attrait. Pourtant Un soir de rafle permet de constater, d'autre part, que le cinéma français reste encore faible, même si beaucoup de choses, et justement l'apparition de ce film, montrent qu'il est en réel progrès. Les films populaires précités sont trois succès d'argent et aussi d'estime, ou 51
