LIVING LEGEND 1942: Temporarily out of films, Shirley studied earnestly, made "B" grades at the Westlake School. Her professional work was limited to radio appearances, chiefly in the CBS Junior Miss show. 1944: Servicemen visiting the glamor-filled Hollywood Canteen found Shirley a pretty and willing waitress. During the war, she also appeared in many radio and camp shows to aid home-front morale. 1944: Shirley had her first real beau — Roy Hotchkiss of the U. S. Army, who squired her around whenever he could get leave. Though she'd met John Agar the year before, Roy was still her favorite. 42 1942: Although Shirley received her first screen kiss in Miss Annie Rooney from Dickie Moore, her mother refused to allow pictures made of the. event. This photo is from the actual movie negative. 1944: Following a brief absence from the screen, Shirley signed a contract with a new boss, David Selznick, and Since You Went Away marked the beginning of a new upsweep in her career. 1945: Shirley was 17 and starred in Kiss and Tell — which put her firmly back in the groove. She announced her engagement to John Agar, the son of a well-to-do Beverly Hills widow.
