2024 Motion Picture N etv s Ohio Board is Given Authority to Censor "Talking Pictures" THE Ohio Board of Censors has been authorized to censor "talking movies," according to a ruling made by Attorney General Turner. The Board, according to the ruling, shall, if necessary, order eliminations of objectionable matter, either seen or heard as part of the picture. This ruling was made in an opinion to John L. Clifton, Director of Education, and head of the Ohio Censor Board. "Hell's Angels," the Caddo air film in which Ben Lyon, Greta Nissen, James Hall, John Darrow, Thelma Todd and George Cooper appear, is in production under per have been handed directors for filming in the near future. Marshall Neilan, completing "Taxi 13," will next start work on "His Last Haul," to star Seena Owen. George B. Seitz will direct "The Circus Kid" and "Blockade." "Tropic Madness," which will feature Anna Q. Nilsson, will be directed by Robert G. Vignola, Ralph Ince will launch "Sinners in Love" and Lynn Shores will handle "Sally's Shoulders." Photography has been in progress on three new features for First National at its Burbank studio. These are "Oh, Kay," "Out of the Ruins" and "His Wife's Affair." Within the p;ist lew days camera work has been finished on "The Butter and Egg Man," "The Whip," "The Head Man," "The Barker." "The Phantom City" and "Heart to Heart." They are now in the cutting rooms. Expected to reach the "finis" state in a few davs are "The Wright Idea," "The Divine Lady" and Harry Langdon's new comedy. De Mille Units Busy Various units are working on the stages of the De Mille studio. Three pictures are now in production there and another is working in the east. Rex Ingram's production of "The Three Passions," based on Cosmo Hamilton's new novel, will have Alice Terry, Clare Eames and Ivan Petrovitch in its cast. Mr. Ingram is making part of the picture in his studio at Nice and some exteriors are being filmed in England. Directors of United Artists Pictures on the 1928-29 list include David Wark Griffith, Charles Chaplin, Ernst Lubitseh, Eric Von Stroheim, Herbert Brenon, Rex Ingram, Sam Taylor, Henry King, Fred Niblo, Edwin Carewe, Victor Fleming, Roland West. Featured players in United Artists Pictures of the 1928-29 season will include Camilla Horn, Lupe Velez, Lily Damita, Louis Wolheim, Gilbert Roland, Don Alvarado and Walter Byi-on. are momentarily expected to join those in work. "Captain Swagger" was launched on June 4 and "Craig's Wife" on May 31. An assortment of pugilists have been obtained from Los Angeles boxing circles for pug roles in "Celebrity," also in the making. The eastern unit is shooting "Annapolis." Probably the next companies to go underneath the arc lights will be those making "Show Folks" and "Marked Money. ' ' Universal W orking on 11 The Carl Laemmle studio at Universal City, which already has finished a large number of lectures for release during the new season, is at present working on 11 new productions. Several units are on location. "The Girl on the Barge" at Whitehall, New York, and another working on the third series of "Collegians" at Phoenix, Ariz. At the studio are the feature companies : "The Night Bird," "The Gate Crasher," "Silks and Saddles," "Phantom Fingers" and "The Crimson Canyon." Short subjects in production are "Jackson Comes Home," "Riders of the Woods," "Hollywood or Bust" and "Handicap," all tworeelers, and "Tarzan the Mighty," a serial. Additions to Casts Harrison Ford, Arthur Hoyt, Wade Boteler, Tom Ricketts, Ivy Harris and Mario Carillo to Paramount 's "Just Married." Lee Forms New Company THE Ameranglo Corporation, a new company, has been formed by Arthur A. Lee, United States representative of Gaumont-British Pictures Corporation, British Screen Productions, Ltd., British Instructional Films, Ltd., Gaumont Company, Ltd., Gainsborough Pictures, Ltd., Piccadilly Pictures, Ltd., and Welch Pearson and Company, Ltd., all English companies. The offices of the new company wil! be at 701 Seventh Avenue, New York. The new corporation, will, it is announced, purchase pictures of American make for distribution abroad and will sell British pictures for distribution in North and South America. American pictures for the American market will not be handled by the company. Among the British films disposed of by Mr. Lee during the past season are "Hunting Tower," "Madamoiselle from Armentieres," "Robinson Crusoe," "The Queen in the Parlor," "Roses of Picardy" and "Fanny Hawthorne." Of these six pictures, the first will be distributed bv Paramount, the second by M-G-M, the third by F B O, the fourth by Pathe, and the fifth and sixth by Excellent Pictures Corp.
