June 2 3 19 28 2U1 New Philadelphia De Luxe House Under Way by Shapiro WHAT will be among the largest and finest de luxe theatres devoted to the showing of photoplays and presentations in Philadelphia, is now under construction. It will be known as the "Uptown" and will be located on Broad Street above Susquehanna Avenue. It is being erected for Samuel Shapiro well known in building and theatrical circles. In addition to the theatre there will be a six story office building. The frontage will be 110 feet with a depth of 180 feet. Magaziner, Eberhardt, and Harris, are the architects. The theatre will bare a seating capacity of 3,000 and in addition to the orchestra floor will have a balcony and promenade. The site for the new theatre is considered an ideal one in building and theatrical circles as it will be at an entrance to the new North Broad Street subway and two squares below the proposed $3,000,000 Reading Railway Station. The theatre will be of the modernistic art in its architecture, furnishings and appointment. The architectural style will be adopted for the exterior of the building as well as for the interior of the theatre. The theatre and office building will be modern and fire-proof in every respect. Every facility for the comfort and accommodation for the patron has been given utmost consideration. In addition to the theatre building the project will include modern stores and located about will be modern offices, which in size, abundance of dav-lisdit and appointment, will be ideal for commercial and professional purposes. The theatre will be the last word in modern appointments, including heating, ventilating and air-cooling systems, special electrical effects, etc. In addition to the "Uptown," Shapiro built the Felton and Ogontz Theatres, both of which are considered among the finest of Philadelphia's neighborhood houses. These are operated by Stanley Company in conjunction with Shapiro. Lets Contract for New Oil City, Pa., House The contract was let on June 5 for the erection of a new theatre, to be known as the Latonia, at East First Street and Central Avenue, Oil City, Pa. The structure will cost $250,000 and ground was broken at once for the foundations by L, 0. Bouquin who obtained the whole contract. The entire building, with the exception of two small first floor stores, will be devoted to the theatre. The structure is designed in many respects along the lines of the new Stanley theatre in Pittsburgh. Marks & Kann, Pittsburgh, are the architects. The auditorium will have a seating capacity of 1,584. It will be equipped both for picture and vaudeville programs, and the stage will be large enough to accommodate large road shows.
