This Memphis lass originally came to Hollywood to write up the glamorous movie city for a press syndicate, but soon succumbed to the lure of acting. Mr. Tully Jim Tully, author of "Beggars of Life." which Paramount is filming, has returned to Hollywood after a stay in New York of two weeks. Late Finishing Date Because many of the scenes are specially constructed exteriors, depicting Alsace-Lorraine during the late war and the early months of post-war, Samuel Goldwyn does not expect to have "The Awakening" completed before August first. Production was begun on May 7. New Sennett Series Three new series of two-reel comedies were started the other day at the Mack Sennett plant at Studio City, Cal. The titles and stories for these three series have been selected and are as follows : "Handy Andy" — "Bungalow Scandal." "Dumb Waiter," "Bath Tub Mystery," "Night Watchman's Mistake," "Hold My Baby" and "Betty's Baggage"; "Tired Business Man" — "Pink Pajamas," "His Latest Excuse," "The Wrong Flat," "His Narrow Escape," "His Wife's Vacation" and "His New Stenographer"; "Dan the Taxi Man"— "In a Taxi," "Taxi Gossip," "Taxi Sweeties," "Taxi Flirts" and "In the Park." In the "Handy Andy" series will be Johnny Burke, Ethel Grey Terry and Vernon Dent. Harry Edwards directs. In the "Tired Business Man" series will be Billy Bevan, Natalie Joyce, Alice Ward, Irving Bacon and Barbara Pierce, Phil Whitman directing. In the "Dan the Taxi Man" series will be Jack Cooper, Virginia Vance and Bud Jamieson, Del Lord to direct. "Sophomore" Unit Finished The Paramount unit at work in Princeton, N. J., for the past two weeks has finished its location work at the university town, and is about to hike back to Hollywood. Charles Rogers heads the company of 12 which made the authentic scenes of this college picture. Various changes were made in the script in order to bring it into conformity with Princeton life. The real collegiate atmosphere will be injected into the film, it is expected, as both the director and scenarist are college graduates. All scenes were played by Princeton undergraduates. The picture will be released in the Fall. "Sophomores," its present title, is for working purposes. New Pathe Productions Pathe is now preparing "Show Folks," "Captain Swagger" and "Sal of Singapore" for early production at De Mille. Phyllis Haver will be the stella player in the' last of this trio. With "Celebrity," "Annapolis" and "Craig's Wife" in filming, the above three make six Pathe pictures on which the studio is already active and on which it will be busy for another month. Pathe is planning "The Spieler" as a cofeaturing and elaborate special of carnival life for Alan Hale and Jacqueline Logan. Mr. Hale will continue to blossom forth as a comedian, at which task he has given a considerable bent of late. But before entering into his "Spieler" role, Hale will play Captain Whalen of a Malay steam freighter in the Haver vehicle. This part will not be comic, but dramatic. "Interference" Lothar Mendes, who directed "A Night of Mystery," will handle Paramount 's production of "Interference," originally announced as "A Crime of Interference." In this opus Clive Brook, Evelyn Brent and William Powell will be featured. On Location Among the companies away from Holly,Avood filming on location sites are two from the Paramount studio and one from that of Warner Bros. Jack Holt, Director F. Richard Jones and a company of 75 have departed for the Segi Canyon and Monumental Valley to film desert sequences for "The Water Hole," a Zane Grey-Paramount western. At Jacumba Hot Springs near the Mexican border are the 75 members of .the Paramount unit taking railroad scenes for "Beggars of Life." The entire Warner Bros, company making "The Midnight Taxi" have been taken by Director John Adolfi to a desolate region in Mexico, where they will live aboard a special train consisting of two Pullmans, a diner and a baggage car. Modistes at T.-S. Studio Tiffany-Stahl believes that "Clothes Make the Woman," and have engaged the services of six expert dress makers for the making of gowns for their various stars who are to appear in forthcoming productions. This department is to be presided over by Madame Alphreda, who was connected with the Bon Marche of Paris for many years. Clothes, it is estimated, play an important part in a production nowadays, appealing as they do to more than 65 per cent of women and girls who attend theatres. Deserts Comedy Frank Capra will temporarily forsake the comedy field to direct "The Way of the Strong," a melodrama of the underworld, for Columbia. The feature will be the director's fourth for this company, to which he is under long-term contract. Young Eddie Quillan Eddie Quillan, who, with Alice Day, acted the roles of country hicks in Mack Sennett comedies, ought to have a big year this season — at least, Cecil B. De Mille has plans in mind for his future. Recently he engaged young Eddie for a part in "The Godless Girl" and following his work in that picture he signed him to a contract which will keep him in the De Mille ranks for the next four years. According to William Sistrom he will be nursed along in featured roles as the first step in the campaign to develop him for stardom. "Show Folks" will mark his debut under the new contract. Jack Jung:meyer has been signed to prepare the continuity and treatment. Wampas Studio Night The Wampas held its regular meeting at the Lasky studios on June 11. Arch Reeve was chairman and had as guests George Bancroft, William Roland, Andy Rice, Buddy Cooper, Karl Brown, James Hall, Fred Beetson and others. The Wampas boys plan a series of studio nights of which this was the second. The speakers included Sol Wurtzel, Mary Astor, Charles Francis Coe and Malcolm Stuart Boylan. Boylan acted as master of ceremonies. Roy Press Printers
