Playing day and date at the Fenway, the same bill was $1,400 up with a take of $6,000. "The Case Against Mrs. Ames," with Ted Lewis and his band on the stage at the Metropolitan, garnered $23,000, over the line by $1,000. "Show Boat" took $7,000 in its third week at Keith's Memorial. "Little Miss Nobody" and Major Bowes' Amateurs brought in $5,500 at Fay's, under by $1,500, and the unusual "Things to Come" and "Brilliant Marriage" garnered $4,500 at the RKO Albee. The usual take is $7,000. Loew's with "Three Wise Guvs" and "Half Angel" was down $4,000, bringing in $8,000. Total first run business was $30,500. Average is $39,500. Gross: $8,000. (Average, $12,000) "Married" Is Top in Slump At Cleveland Cleveland, June 15. — The Republican national convention knocked the spots out of downtown first run business. With thousands of visitors in town, theatre grosses dropped to a new low for the season. "And So They Were Married," with a stage show headed by N. T. G. and his Radio show, the RKO Palace was the only house to go over the top and that only to the tune of $500, marking up a gross of $15,500. "Gentle Julia," playing four days at the Allen, and "The Farmer in the Dell" for three days, made an average $3,000 total at the Allen. "Bullets or Ballots," playing a second week at Warners' Hippodrome, came within $500 of the $8,000 average. The picture doubled average business its first week. "Sins of Man" dropped $3,000 below par to an $8,000 take at Loew's State, while "Fatal Lady" needed $1,000 to reach the theatre's average of $4,000. Total first run business was $37,550. (Average, $8,000) New Color Process Reported Invented Chicago, June 15. — Telco, new process for films in color is said to have been evolved here by two young men, Robert Hoyt and Leon Ungar, whose experiments presumably were financed in part by an unnamed Hollywood studio. The claim is made that the new process will save both time and money in the production of films in color. Promote Wally Westmore Hollywood, June 15. — Wally Westmore has been placed in complete charge of the makeup and hairdressing departments at Paramount. Lenore Sabine has been appointed head hair dresser. The Westmore brothers supervise makeup and hair dressing at Paramount, Radio and Warners. "Devil Sissy" Cast Full Hollywood, June 15. — M-G-M has completed the cast of "The Devil Is a Sissy." The latest additions are Gene and Kathleen Lockhart, Etienne Giradot and Mary Doran. Freddie Bartholomew, Jackie Cooper and Mickey Rooney also are in the cast. Rowland Brown will direct. "Number" a Denver Draw with $8,500 Denver, June 15. — "Private Number" turned out to be a hit. After several standouts and steady business in between during the week the take at the Denver reached $8,500, up by $1,500, and the film was moved to the Aladdin for a second week downtown. "The King Steps Out" continued strong by getting $2,500 at the Broadway, after a week each at the Denver and Aladdin. This was $1,000 over par. "Things to Come" was a surprise at the Paramount, going to $5,500, up by $2,500. "Fury" and "Let's Sing Again," on a dual at the Orpheum, started well, but dipped later and finished $500 under the line. Total first run business was $30,500. Average is $27,250. "Charlie Chan at the Circus" on the College dual with "Lady of Secrets" missed the $2,800 average by $800; while the Paramount shot down to almost half its normal $4,800 with "Fatal Lady" and "Nobody's Fool." Yeager, president, was made a Texas Ranger by special commission brought by Claude Ezell. sales manager. The convention, which lasted three days, was highlighted by a luncheon at a local hotel, attended by more than 200 salesmen, exhibitors and distributors, and a day's outing at Colorado Springs. At the luncheon it was revealed that over 4,000 theatres are now using the Bank Night scheme.
