"East Meets" Tops Capital With $5,800
Washington, Nov. 5. — Doing the best relative business along the main stem, "East Meets West," at the Metropolitan took $5,800 to exceed -> average by $1,500.
Playing a repeat engagement of "His Brother's Wife," Loew's Columbia drew $4,100, topping par by $500.
Loew's Capitol, with the "Fall Frolic" on the stage and "The Devil Is a Sissy" on the screen, was good for $21,000, a single century over average.
"The Big Broadcast of 1937" took $16,500 at Loew's Palace, to go over par by $600. It was held.
The Earle, with "Valiant Is the Word for Carrie" and Lazy Dan headlining the stage show, slipped to $15,700, or $2,700 under average.
Total first run business was $75,700. Average is $76,700.

Hollywood, Nov. 5. — Larry Darmour has signed Ernest B. Schoedsack to direct "No More Heroes," the next in his series of Jack Holt pictures for Columbia release. The story is from a novel by J. D. Newsom, and deals with the Foreign Legion.
Canada Cuts Fair Tax
Toronto, Nov. 5. — A further concession with respect to the amusements tax has been made by the Ontario Government in the removal of the levy on fall fairs, the assessment on admissions to theatres remaining as before.
Conduct Camera Tests
Hollywood, Nov. 5. — The Research Council Silent Camera Committee of the Academy conducted a comprehensive noise analysis test of several new type cameras on a stage at the M-G-M | studio.
Set Eddie Cantor's Next
Hollywood, Nov. 5. — Eddie Cantor's next picture — his first for Twentieth Century-Fox — will be "Saratoga Chips," a racetrack story by Damon Runyon and Irving Caesar.
"Pigskin Parade" Leads Louisville
Louisville, Nov. 5. — "P i g s k i n Parade," with "Mummy's Boys" at the Strand, made the best comparative showing in town, tallying $4,500, an even $1,000 over the line. Both pictures were moved to the Brown for a second week.
"Libeled Lady" at the Brown, did well on the holdover. The take was $2,800, $300 over average for the house, and the best business the house has enjoyed since it came under the joint management of Loew's State and the Rialto. "Daniel Boone" at the Rialto had a good weekend business, with George O'Brien making a personal appearance for three days. Takings were $4,700, $200 over the weekly average. Several thousand tickets were distributed to school children, through the support of the ParentTeachers' Assn.
Opposition was furnished by the WLS Barn Dance which played the Memorial Auditorium Sunday, Oct. 25, for four performances. The weather was mild, with excessive rainfall.
Total first run business was $22,850. Average is $21,800.

"Broadcast" Gets $12,000, Montreal
Montreal, Nov. 5. — "The Big Broadcast of 1937," with "The Final Hour," at the Capitol, led the parade among first runs with a $12,000 gross and was held over for a second week.
"East Meets West," topping the British dual at His Majesty's, was also held over after registering $6,500.
"The Last of the Mohicans" was good for $8,000 at the Princess, while "Kelly, the Second" and a stage show at Loew's brought in $11,500, also above par. Second week of "Dodsworth" at the Palace accounted for $7,000.
Big-time football provided the chief opposition and between season weather prevailed with a mixture of snow, rain and mildness.

All houses went over average, with favorable weather helping. A show at 'the American and politics on the air were the chief competition.

Des Moines, Nov. 5. — George W. Hartley has resigned as manager of the local G.B. office and Lester Rosenthal, with G.B. in Omaha, has been named to replace him.
"Libeled" Is Kansas City Hit, $21,000
Kansas City, Nov. 5. — "Libeled Lady" hit $21,000 at Loew's Midland's to lead on all counts in a week that was only fair for other first runs. This was $9,500 over the Midland's average, but the picture was not held.
The other houses felt the election competition. The Kansas City Philharmonic played its opening two-night performance of the season at the new Municipal Auditorium, where few seats were vacant.
"They Met in a Taxi" and stage show at the Tower went $300 over $6,500 average, and "Cain and Mabel" played to an $8,000 average house at the Mainstreet.
"Dimples" failed to hold up in its second week at the Uptown, taking $600 under $4,000 average, although it did over average its first period at the Mainstreet the preceding week. "The Magnificent Brute" proved something of a box-office weakling at the Newman, where the picture garnered $4,600, $2,400 under the line.
