Fight "China" Film Ban
Vancouver, B. C, Feb. 20. — A crowd of more than 3,000 in the Orpheum Theatre registered a protest against the censor ban on "China Strikes Back," which had been scheduled for showing at the meeting.
Led by A. M. Stephen, president of the Canadian League for Peace and Democracy, Vancouver branch, under whose auspices the meeting was held, the crowd passed a resolution asking for an investigation into amount of influence brought to bear on the censors by foreign consulates.
May Syndicate "Snooks"
Hollywood, Feb. 20. — "Baby Snooks," as created by Fanny Brice on M-G-M's Maxwell House coffee radio program and in the picture, "Everybody Sing," may become the subject of a syndicated newspaper cartoon strip. Robert Allan, cartoonist, is negotiating a deal with Miss Brice and M-G-M.
McShane to Brattleboro
Boston, Feb. 20. — Frank McShane is now manager of the Paramount in Brattleboro, Vt. The house is operated by Western Massachusetts Theatres, Inc. McShane formerly managed the Strand in Dorchester for M. & P.
Four for Four
"How is business?" a reporter asked a New York manager yesterday shortly after his theatre opened for the day.
"I've got a four-star picture and four patrons in the house, one for each star," came the reply.
Runs on B Vay Are Worrying Subsequents
(Continued from page 1)
"Every Day's a Holiday" finished three weeks at the Paramount ; "Hurricane" completed a five-week stretch at the Rivoli ; "Happy Landing" finished four weeks at the Roxy ; "The Bad Man of Brimstone" ended two weeks at the Capitol, while "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" completed a five-week run at the Music Hall. Five of the nine first runs were holdovers. The long runs at the Music Hall and the Rivoli forced a shift in bookings on following pictures at these houses.
The distributors, it was explained, are in a dilemma on the situation since while they want all the revenue they can get through the first run bookings, at the same time they must get other pictures played and circulated among the subsequent runs. Where a theatre, such as the Music Hall, has commitments with two or three distributors for completed pictures, the pressure to cut a current engagement short in order to make way for a film awaiting general release often is strong.
"Snow" Run Unusual
The "Snow White" run was an unusual situation. As a result, the Music Hall waived its usual seven days to two weeks' protection and permitted the film to open at the Palace and Albee in Brooklyn on Saturday, two days after the close of the engagement at the large house. The Palace and Albee will hold the picture definitely for two weeks and possibly three. The RKO runs in Manhattan will open with "Snow White" on March 3 for a week, and the circuit will waive its usual seven days' protection over the independents to permit them to get the film March 12. RKO will open "Snow White" at its Brooklyn runs on March 10. The circuit will play the picture as a single bill in all of its situations.
RKO points to "Snow White" in refutation of the charge that a long downtown run is detrimental to the neighborhoods and claims that the picture is gaining a momentum that will assure good business in the later runs regardless of the time element.
